7 Things To Clear Out

Yuna22 سبتمبر 2026 · قراءة لمدة 4 دقيقة
January usually gets all the attention when it comes to fresh starts, but September can be just as useful for resetting your home. The return to school, changing routines and the approach of the holiday season make it a natural moment to look around and decide what is genuinely worth keeping.
Professional organizers say the goal is not to empty every cupboard, but to remove the items that quietly create frustration: expired food, mismatched containers, forgotten school papers and products nobody uses anymore.
A focused September clear-out can make everyday routines easier and prevent clutter from becoming overwhelming later in the year.

Expired Pantry Items

The pantry is one of the easiest places for clutter to hide. Old spices, sauces, tins and half-used packets often get pushed to the back and forgotten.
Organizing expert Jane Stoller recommends checking dates and removing products that are no longer useful. Trish Johnson, a professional organizer and owner of This Organized Chaos, also explained that a well-organized pantry makes it easier to see what is already available, which can save both time and money when planning meals.
Creating simple zones for breakfast foods, snacks and cooking staples can make the cupboard much easier to use.

Mismatched Food Containers

Food-storage cupboards have a strange tendency to fill themselves with missing lids, warped containers and pieces that no longer belong to anything.
If a lid does not fit, a container is damaged or a set has been incomplete for months, there is little reason to keep it. Removing unusable pieces instantly creates more space and makes finding a proper container much less frustrating.

Old School Papers And Supplies

September is also the ideal time to deal with the pile of worksheets, artwork and supplies left over from the previous school year.
Johnson suggests keeping only meaningful projects rather than every sheet of paper. A dedicated memory box can hold favourite pieces, while usable supplies that are no longer needed can be donated. Damaged or incomplete items can simply be discarded.

Unused Water Bottles

Many households own far more reusable water bottles than they actually need. Some are forgotten at the back of cupboards, while others may be chipped, rusted or missing parts.
Keep the bottles you regularly use and donate those that are still in good condition. Johnson recommends a simple one-in, one-out rule: when a new bottle arrives, remove an older one.

Old Cosmetics And Skincare

Bathrooms can quickly become crowded with half-used beauty products bought on impulse.
September is a useful time to check sunscreen, skincare and makeup, particularly products left over from summer. Stoller notes that sunscreen and many seasonal products may no longer be suitable by the following year, while Johnson recommends sorting cosmetics by category and removing anything expired, old or never used.
This also makes it easier to see what you already own before buying replacements.

Broken Or Forgotten Toys

After a busy summer, children’s toys are another category worth reviewing.
Sort them by type, donate anything that is still in good condition but no longer played with, and remove broken toys or sets with important pieces missing. This can make play areas easier to maintain once school routines begin again.

Anything Unused For A Year

One of the simplest decluttering rules is to look at what you have not touched in the past 12 months.
Clothes, decorations, spare linens and stored household items can all quietly accumulate. Organization expert Vanessa Garcia explained that items left untouched for more than a year are unlikely to become useful simply because they remain in storage.
The point is not to throw away everything sentimental. Instead, September offers a practical opportunity to separate genuinely meaningful belongings from objects that are simply taking up space.
A successful home reset does not require an entire weekend or dozens of storage boxes. Starting with these seven categories can make cupboards, bathrooms and living spaces noticeably easier to manage — just in time for the busiest months of the year.
