Located near San Jose Succotz village, this historic destination combines ancient stone structures, peaceful forest views, and a scenic journey across the Mopan River.
When we arrive here, the first thing we notice is El Castillo, the site’s largest pyramid. Standing about 130 feet tall, this remarkable structure gives us a wide view of the surrounding countryside. As we walk through the plazas and temples, we can discover detailed carvings and imagine the importance of this place many centuries ago.

Location And Travel Distance
Xunantunich is located in the Cayo District, close to the town of San Ignacio. It is one of the easiest historic sites to visit when staying in western Belize.
From San Ignacio, the journey is about 12 kilometers and usually takes around 15-20 minutes by car. From Belize City, the trip takes around 2.5-3 hours by road, so many travelers choose to stay in San Ignacio and visit Xunantunich as a half-day trip.
