A Color That Shouldn't Exist

From the shore, the water of Moraine Lake looks digitally enhanced — a deep, luminous blue-green somewhere between tropical ocean and glacial ice, shifting shade depending on the angle of the light.
Paddle a yellow canoe out to the center on a still morning, and the ten jagged peaks of the Valley of the Ten Peaks surround you in a 180-degree panorama, their reflections dissolving perfectly into the water below.
This is Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, and this precise view — once printed on the back of Canada's $20 bill — has become one of the most recognized natural images in the world.
The color comes from glacial rock flour: ultrafine mineral particles ground from bedrock by retreating glaciers, suspended in the meltwater, scattering light at exactly the wavelength that produces that impossible turquoise.

The Only Way to Get Here Now

Since 2023, private vehicles have been permanently banned from Moraine Lake Road year-round. The only way to reach the lake is via the Parks Canada shuttle system, departing from the Lake Louise Park and Ride. Shuttle reservations open online at 8:00 AM MT in mid-April for 40% of the season's seats — the remaining 60% release on a rolling 48-hour window throughout the season. Book the moment reservations open. Early morning Alpine Start Shuttles depart at 4:00 and 5:00 AM for those wanting sunrise conditions, when the lake surface is perfectly still and the crowds haven't arrived. The lake is accessible from approximately late May through mid-October, when the road closes for winter avalanche risk. No cellular service or Wi-Fi operates at the lake — download maps and confirmations before you go.

On the Water: The Best View You Can Buy

Moraine Lake has been designated a Water Preservation Zone, meaning only one type of watercraft is permitted: the canoes operated exclusively by Moraine Lake Lodge. The dock opens daily at 9:30 AM and closes at 5:00 PM, operating mid-June through mid-September depending on water levels. Rentals are strictly first-come, first-served — no reservations accepted. Each canoe holds 2 to 3 people and comes with paddles, life jackets, and basic instruction. The most rewarding route is to circumnavigate the entire lake — paddling up one shore beneath the towering peaks and returning along the other, where loose rock chutes sweep down to the water's edge. From the far end of the lake, looking back toward the north shore, you see the Valley of the Ten Peaks exactly as it appeared on that banknote — except now you are inside it.

Worth Every Complicated Step

Moraine Lake rewards the effort it demands. The shuttle reservation, the early alarm, the first-come wait for a canoe — all of it dissolves the moment you push off from the dock and feel the cold mountain air above that impossible blue water. Paddle slowly. Look up often. The ten peaks have been here for millennia and will outlast every photo ever taken of them — but this moment, with the water moving beneath your hull and the mountains standing silent all around, belongs only to you.
